In the past, I have not liked Snoballs (snowcones to my non-southern friends). The main reason is that when I would order one in the past it was way too much ice and not enough flavoring. Occasionally, there would be enough flavor but for some reason it was pooled in the bottom of the snoball paper cone holder, and would often leak on my clothes–ewwwww. But my eldest daughter changed that today and everyone can blame her when I say I want a snoball!
Of course, I do not just want any snoball. I want a snoball from Bedford Snoball (Like them on Facebook). I must admit that when my daughter asked to get a snoball, I was honestly thinking, “Really!? Do we have too!” To add to this my stomach was not so hot from too much BBQ on the 4th of July. But I am a good father and went with her, my wife and my son. My middle princess had to work. I was not looking forward to this dessert as I knew my daughter would not let me off without getting one.
As we approached the little hut that housed the Snoball place, I saw a bunch of people outside. I should have realized that probably meant something but I brushed it off. Because I wasn’t feeling well, I announced, “I am going to stay in the car!” I thought this was get me off the hook, but my wife responded, “That’s ok, because we are going through the drive-thru!” Dang! As we pulled up, the list of flavors is ginormous! I decided to try something called a “Raspberry Dreamcicle” because I love Raspberry flavor and the old Orange Creamcicles, which is what I guessed this was based after. My wife did the ordering.
Mine was the first one to come out and immediately I noticed something was different. To begin with, I got my snoball in a cup not a paper cone that was half falling apart by the time it was in my hand. Second, I could see that my ice shavings were completely covered in an orange-ish color. Snowcones up north were very often a ball of ice chips that had some washed out color that might be able to be seen. And if that was not enough to make me think that this experience would be different the snoball came with both a spoon and a straw. Someone was thinking here. In the past, I never got a straw with my snoball. And no matter how good it is, the snoball is going to be melting the moment you get it. To add a straw to your snoball showed me that this place took their craft seriously.
I took my first mouthful of the raspberry dreamcicle and I have to say that I was in heaven. The flavor was absolutely amazing and evenly distributed throughout. In addition, it was not too sweet nor was it lacking in flavor. It was, well, perfect. I very quickly devoured mine and was immensely satisfied. To top this all off, we ordered a large and four of us were served for under $10. With a family of five, I know that is a great deal.
So, it is all my eldest daughter’s fault for dragging me out to try the Bedford Snoball and now everyone can blame here when I am waiting to make a run for a snoball. Thanks!
