Marvin the Martian is by far my favorite looney tune character. I have loved him ever since I first saw him way back when I was first starting to watch cartoons. I loved how he was humorous and yet still a bit sinister with his whole desire to blow up the Earth. He was smart, almost smarter than Bugs Bunny. He was brilliant in his encounter with Duck Dodgers in the 24th and a half century. Again, at that time, he was drawn, voiced and characterized as a brilliant sinister, albeit somewhat comical, alien, or martian. To a real Sci-Fi fan, he was our Looney Tune.
That was until lately. The latest looney tune cartoon that I happened upon on the Cartoon Network was a very big disappointment. It is obvious that whomever is in charge does not get this character. Instead of being humorous but a sinister brilliant martian, he is more a dumbfounded goofy alien that can barely get dressed by himself. I was very disappointed to see this from a character that I loved. I was very disappointed to see his, albeit short, screen time that defined his character be reduced to non-existent history for this new version. It seemed to be more about goofy big feet. I read that this more goofy version of Marvin began when they had him on “Baby Looney Tunes” and has continued essentially since then. Sad.
So, I want everyone to gather around with me and urge Warner Brothers who makes the Looney Tunes to return Marvin to his former glory. While I am not always in favor of a more “darker” approach to characters, I would like to see Marvin as a formidable alien character that is out to destroy the Earth and thwart humanity. I would like to see him as sinister alien with his own show, of course where he is the bad guy, but perhaps one where he crashes on Earth with the intent to destroy it and a group of humans stop him. Maybe this group even collectively tricks him to return to Mars. Where he can plot a sequel.
Anyway, I just hate it when they take a beloved character and change him for no apparent reason and make him/her worse. I wish they would return Marvin to the way he was. I know he is popular because when I was in Six Flags in New Jersey there was a whole store dedicated just to his character and things were selling out of there pretty fast.
